What to expect from your first session?
You and me and a cup of tea. Don't worry coffee lovers, we have both.
It can be normal to have nerves for your first counselling session. Although we will have talked briefly on the introduction call, we are still strangers. The first session will be an opportunity for us to get to know each other. All questions are welcomed and encouraged. It's essential that you feel comfortable and if you feel I am not the right therapist for you after our session, that's okay.
You are not required to perform or say the right things. I understand the steps you have taken to get to this point may have taken a lot and trust isn't built in the first session. There is no rush, we will work at a pace that feels right for you.
We will talk through the necessary paperwork, this will take us through the formality of counselling and what can be expected such as attendance, cancellations, frequency and confidentiality. It is important that you feel comfortable during our session together and we can discuss any adjustment that can be made to my office to ensure this.
We will then talk though what feels heavy and any previous experiences you may have with therapy. You may leave the first session with a feeling of relief, curiosity of what may come up for you in future session, and reassurance that you have support with what they may been carrying alone.
At the end of the session, we can look at booking the next session or you can contact me later on once you have made your decision to continue.
