Is it ‘big’ enough to take to counselling?
Have you found yourself asking yourself this question? Going round in circles about whether what you're experiencing feels ‘bad’ or ‘big enough to bring to counselling. Do you wonder what others bring and compare that others may have it ‘worse’.
It may be that you have always put others first and taking the first step to supporting yourself feels uncomfortable. You may be finding it difficult to feel that your emotions matter.
If it weighs heavy and takes up so much space that it casts a shadow or leaves little space for ‘other stuff’ in your life, It matters. If it matters to you it matters to me. There is no invisible criteria to meet. I am not here to judge what is heavy enough, I am here to support you in sharing the weight, helping you rearrange the weight and talk through where the weight came from and if it is even yours to carry.
It takes courage to take the first step. ‘Courage starts with showing up and letting ourselves be seen’ (Brene Brown).
Counselling offers a safe space to start letting part of ourselves be seen. This may be sharing those spiralling what if thoughts that may induce shame or fear , those loud thoughts that chip away at your self-worth, life experiences that have gone unspoken but it can also be about getting to know yourself better, processing everyday experiences, improving relationships. Sometimes it can start with a feeling such as feeling exhausted, low or stuck. Sometimes the first session can start with ‘I am not really sure why I am here’ and that's okay. We can take it at a pace that suits you, you choose what and when we talk about what matters to you. I trust you know what feels right for you and I will take your lead.
If you have been wondering about the weight of what you're carrying, please reach out and we can talk over what it is feeling heavy in a 15-minutes consultation call.
